How To Deepen Your Walk With God

Deepn Your Walk God

As a born again child of God, I want to know my Heavenly Father. As Jesus spent time in prayer to spend time with His Father, I too have a desire to spend time with Him as well. It should be the desire of His children as well. Do we desire God, His Presence, and His Power? I don’t claim to know it all, and I spend a lot of time learning this, but I want to help us learn how to deepen our walk with God.

Long Seasons Of Prayer

It is obvious that we need time to pray, but can we say we spend seasons in prayer? It’s kind of like the song ‘Sweet Hour Of Prayer’…can we spend an hour in prayer? Most people can’t sing that song. Rather, their song is ‘Sweet 10 Minutes In Prayer’. If we are to have a strong walk with God, then we must learn how to spend time in prayer.

Think about it. Every major person in the Bible knew that time with God is important for their walk and to see God answer prayer. We find the church in Jerusalem praying for long times just to have one request answered. They prayed for 10 days to be full of the Holy Ghost. They prayed all night for Peter to be set free. Peter was in season of prayer when God led to carry the Gospel to the gentiles. Paul spent 3 days in prayer waiting to baptized.

I can go on and on. The point is that we need to learn how to give time to hear from heaven and let heaven hear from us.

For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.
~ Psalms 86:5-6

Listen To The Bible In Audio Format

This may not seem like something ‘deep’ but God promised to bless those who read, hear, and keep His Word. Most people don’t really read the Bible, let alone hear it. I used to read the Bible out loud, but now I listen to it in mp3 format. When one hears it, the Scriptures seem to come alive. The Bible is well enough to speak to hearts when read, but add hearing it to your walk and it will help increase your intake of God’s Word.

I normally listen to the Bible while driving. I simply use my phone as an mp3 player. Then I get an FM transmitter that will plug into my phone head set. It will broadcast the audio to the station I set it for and I find the station on the radio. Now I have the Bible while I drive. I’ve had the opportunity to preach in a lot of churches in New Mexico, and I like to saturate myself with the Bible before I get there.

Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
~ Revelation 1:3

Learn To Fast

Fasting is a the key that really opens the doors to the Power and Blessing of God. Fasting is the simply the denial of food for a set amount of time. When one is on a fast, they are not only denying food, but their flesh. When our flesh in under submission, the Spirit of God can work more Powerfully in the believer’s life.

The Spirit of God inhabits every born again child of God the moment of Salvation. The question then is NOT “How much of the Spirit do I have”, but rather, “How much does the Spirit of God have me”? When we fast, we are letting the Spirit of God have us. There is not limit to what God can do with a person totally yielded to Him!

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.
~ 1 Kings 19:8

Listen To Godly Music

Music is a BIG factor in a believers life. It feeds the soul. So, the question is, what are feeding our soul? It’s amazing to note that Paul writes the church of Ephesus and relates being filled with the Spirit of God with listening to Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs. Paul also mentions “making melody in our hearts unto God”. I find music with strong beats takes away from the melody. I find sensual music changes the melody. Therefore, MOST of modern day “Christian” music is not as Spiritual as God demands.

When we use music to walk with God, it helps create an attitude of worship. Jesus stated that we worship with “Spirit and Truth”. This is why I choose old time Gospel music, because it is RICH in Truth. A lot of CCM is very shallow with no direct mention of God. Jesus said there must be truth. Truth in the Bible always deals with the Word of God and true doctrine.

When we listen to pure music that promotes the Truth of God, it helps us meditate on the handiwork of God. This helps set the tone for our time with God. As we dwell on God, His Goodness, and His Salvation, we can’t help but give Him the Glory and know that we are in His Presence. Think about this, the Psalmist said that God inhabits the praise of His People.

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;
~ Ephesians 5:18-19
