Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
~ 2 Timothy 1:9

The calling of God is the most important calling an individual can have. It is higher than any other calling because the calling comes from the Highest of all, The Lord God Almighty. Considering callings from earthly individuals, one would be honored, yet people think a calling from God is a sacrifice. It is not a sacrifice, it’s more honoring then the calling of the highest of world leaders. The reason is because of the One that is calling, and the reward He gives for following the call.

The amazing thing is that God doesn’t call the equipped, rather, He equips the called. Every born again child of God has a calling, a place of ministry and service for our Lord in the form of serving those around us and spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is my personal conviction that every calling has an operation in the local church Jesus established during his earthly ministry. I believe that people can see man-made results operating outside the local church, but they will not have the divine blessing of the institution that Jesus loved and gave Himself for, the Local Visible New Testament Church. I will explain more about the “Church of the Man of God” in another post. Just trust that Jesus has a church that He started during His earthly ministry, and that it is alive and well today, and it’s not the result of protestants nor is it universal or invisible.

This calling is not just for a pastor. In fact, I know of some people in church that are just as much a man of God as their pastor. You don’t have to be a pastor, preacher, deacon, or in full time ministry to be a Man of God. It is also my conviction that God wants every man in a local church to be a Man of God, regardless of position or title. If you are a man, then God wants you to be His Man. If you are a lady, then God wants to use you to help His men. It can also be said that a woman can make or break a man of God. Therefore women are vital to God calling and using His Men.

As I mentioned above, every person has a calling. This calling is a three-fold calling that all have a responsibility to live up to:

  1. Glorify God
  2. Spread The Gospel of Jesus Christ
  3. Serve Both The Lost & Saved Alike
Though we have have the same purpose, the actual position will be different from person to person. For instance, not everyone can be the pastor. Not everyone can be a deacon. For one, they has specific qualifications, but a church full of pastors is like a body with all arms and not legs. It may learn to get around, but arms have a different function, and it would not function as great as a leg should. Just as each part is important and has a role, so do you as an individual in the local body/church. How you function and what you do is given by God. It is your calling and it is important, no matter how small it may be.
Because each member of the local church is part of the local body, we must find what part we are, and glorify God in that calling. So what are some things a Man of God may be called to?:
  • Pastor (Must meet qualifications)
  • Deacon (Must meet qualifications)
  • Evangelist
  • Missionary
  • Godly Husband & Father
  • Laymen Preacher
  • Soul winner
  • Janitor
  • Song Leader
  • Musician
  • Teacher
  • Bus Worker
  • Church Treasurer
  • Prayer Warrior
  • Lift Your Pastors Arm In the Battle
  • Win Your Family To Christ
  • And The List Can Go On…….
The possibilities are endless. They are unlimited. It is because we have an endless God that wants to use His people to do a work greater than ourselves, through His endless power.
Now that we understand that God has a calling for us that revolves around the three-fold purpose mentioned above, we must find out what our specific function is in the body. We need to know exactly what God has called us to. Please remember that no calling is lower or higher than another. We are all sinners saved by the same Blood. We have nothing to boast about. If we glory, it is in the Cross of Jesus, where the Sinless Lamb of God stood in the sinner’s place.
One might think that God doesn’t have anything specific for them, but nearly every major Bible Man of God had a time where God called them unto His work.
  • Abraham
Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: ~ Genesis 12:1
  • Moses
And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I. ~ Exodus 3:3-4
  • Isaiah
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. ~ Isaiah 6:8
  • Jeremiah
Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth. ~ Jeremiah 1:9
  • Ezekiel
The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was there upon him. ~ Ezekiel 1:3
  • Jonah
Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me. ~ Jonah 1:1-2
  • Elijah
And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan. ~ 1 Kings 17:2-3
  • David
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. ~ 1 Samuel 16:13
  • Peter
This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me. ~ John 21:19
  • Paul
But the Lord said unto him,  Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel: For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake. ~ Acts 9:15-16
  • Barnabas
As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. ~ Acts 13:2

Every single man of God mentioned above had a specific time where God called them, and it was to a specific task. One thing to consider also is that there were other men of God that were used, that didn’t have a “thus saith the Lord.”  But they still had a task that I believe God equipped them for and it was only for them. Just as in war, some are drafted/called, others volunteer, all for the same purpose, there is a battle that must be won.

We too are in a battle, a spiritual battle. The enemy, Satan, is real. He is taking as many people to Hell as he possibly can through blinding people with religions, traditions, false beliefs, science, new age, and on and on. Hell is real. It is enlarging every day. The flames are real. The battle is going on. Just as Aaron “stood between the dead and the living”(c.f. Numbers 16:48), we need God-called men to lift the Cross of Christ to a lost and dying world.
